We built a luxury marketplace app that connects consumers directly to the global diamond market, bypassing traditional jeweler markups and offering access to over 300,000 certified stones with 360° HD visualization, real-time pricing, and secure delivery.
About This Project
The diamond industry operates on a model that hasn't changed in centuries. From mine to finger, a stone passes through 5 to 7 intermediaries — miners, cutters, wholesalers, brokers, jewelers — each adding their margin. By the time a consumer sees a diamond in a display case, they're paying 30% to 50% more than the stone's true market value. Worse, the buying experience is opaque: limited selection, no real price comparison, and a heavy reliance on the jeweler's word.
SC Diamonds was founded to disrupt this chain entirely. Based between Antwerp — the world capital of diamonds — and Paris, the founding team envisioned a mobile-first platform that would give consumers the same access to certified stones that was previously reserved for industry professionals. They turned to AppStarter to design and build a luxury-grade application worthy of the product it sells: rare, certified diamonds at wholesale prices, delivered with white-glove service.
THE CHALLENGE
SC Diamonds had to solve a paradox: democratize access to the diamond market while preserving the exclusivity and trust that luxury buyers demand.
Trust in a High-Stakes Purchase Buying a diamond online — often sight unseen — requires extraordinary trust. The app needed to overcome deep-seated consumer skepticism by making certification, provenance, and ethical sourcing immediately visible and verifiable. Every stone had to be backed by GIA, IGI, or HRD certificates, with Kimberley Process compliance guaranteeing conflict-free origins. Trust couldn't be claimed — it had to be demonstrated on every screen.
Luxury Experience on Mobile The diamond buying experience is inherently sensory — the way light plays through a stone, the weight in your hand, the emotion of the moment. Translating this into a mobile interface without losing the sense of prestige was a significant design challenge. The app had to feel like walking into a private showroom on Place Vendôme, not scrolling through a product catalog.
Complexity of Global Inventory SC Diamonds connects to the global diamond exchange in real-time, offering access to over 300,000 certified stones. Filtering this massive inventory by the 4Cs (Carat, Color, Clarity, Cut), price, shape, and certification — while keeping the experience fast and intuitive — required sophisticated search architecture and a UI that makes professional-grade tools accessible to non-expert buyers.
OUR APPROACH
We applied our four-phase methodology to deliver a product that meets the standards of both the luxury and tech worlds.
PHASE 1 — PRODUCT STRATEGY
We immersed ourselves in the diamond industry's value chain to understand how SC Diamonds could position itself as a credible alternative to traditional jewelers. The product strategy was built around three universes that reflect distinct buyer motivations: Invest (diamonds as a tangible, portable asset), Gift (the emotional gesture of offering a certified stone), and Create (selecting a stone for custom jewelry). This segmentation drove the entire app architecture, ensuring each user finds a journey that speaks to their intent. We also defined the concierge service model — expert gemologists available via WhatsApp — as a key conversion lever for high-value purchases.
PHASE 2 — UX/UI DESIGN
The design language had to communicate one thing above all: prestige. We chose a dark, cinematic palette — deep blacks, muted golds, and diamond-white typography — inspired by haute joaillerie maisons rather than e-commerce platforms. Every interaction was crafted to feel deliberate and refined: smooth transitions, generous whitespace, and photography that treats each stone as a work of art. The 360° HD visualization feature was placed at the center of the product experience, allowing users to inspect every facet with greater precision than a jeweler's loupe. The certificate display was designed for instant readability — GIA, IGI, or HRD logos prominently visible, with full documentation accessible in one tap. The bilingual experience (French/English) was built natively, not as an afterthought, reflecting SC Diamonds' positioning between Antwerp and Paris.
PHASE 3 — DEVELOPMENT
Development covered iOS and Android natively, with a responsive web presence. Key integrations include a real-time connection to the global diamond exchange with live inventory and pricing, a 360° HD stone visualization engine allowing inspection at jeweler-grade detail, an advanced filtering system across the 4Cs, shape, certification body, and price range, a secure payment infrastructure adapted to high-value transactions, a favorites and price history system for investment-minded buyers, and a concierge chat integration for personalized guidance. The architecture was built to handle the scale of 300,000+ stones while maintaining sub-second search performance.
PHASE 4 — LAUNCH
The launch was orchestrated across the App Store, Google Play, and a premium web experience. ASO targeted high-intent keywords like "buy certified diamonds," "GIA diamonds," and "wholesale diamonds." The landing page was designed as a brand statement first and a conversion tool second — leading with the value proposition of eliminating intermediary markups, then building trust through certification logos (GIA, IGI, HRD Antwerp), testimonials, and the three-universe framework. A newsletter ("Join the Inner Circle") was implemented to capture high-intent leads with exclusive trend analysis and investment opportunities.
