Pillz: Medication Tracker

Overview

We built a medication tracking app that helps patients and doctors stay on top of pill schedules through smart reminders, homescreen widgets, and a fully customizable pill management system.

About This Project

Medication non-adherence is one of the most costly and dangerous problems in modern healthcare. Studies estimate that 50% of patients don't take their medications as prescribed, leading to 125,000 preventable deaths and $300 billion in avoidable healthcare costs annually in the United States alone. Existing reminder apps are either too clinical, too complex, or lack the polish to earn a permanent place on a user's phone.

Pillz was born from a conviction that medication adherence should feel effortless, not burdensome. The founding team — backed by doctors who described tracking pills with patients as a constant struggle — turned to AppStarter to build an iOS application that makes pill management as intuitive as checking the weather: a daily glance, a quick tap, and you're done.

THE CHALLENGE

Pillz had to transform one of healthcare's most persistent behavioral problems into a seamless, even enjoyable, daily habit.

Daily Habit Formation The fundamental challenge wasn't technical — it was behavioral. Most medication apps are abandoned within the first week because they feel like a chore. Pillz needed to integrate so naturally into the user's routine that checking medications becomes as automatic as checking the time. This meant designing for speed (under 3 seconds to log a take), reducing friction to zero, and leveraging iOS-native features like widgets to keep medications visible without ever opening the app.

Medical Accuracy & Trust Medication management is inherently high-stakes — a missed dose of blood pressure medication has very different consequences than a missed vitamin. The app needed to handle complex schedules (multiple medications, varying frequencies, specific timing relative to meals), display precise dosage information, and maintain a reliable notification system that users can trust with their health.

Personalization Without Complexity Every patient's medication regimen is unique — different pills, dosages, frequencies, and timing requirements. The app needed to offer deep customization (pill shape, color, background, schedule) while keeping the setup process fast and the daily interface uncluttered. The goal: make each user feel like the app was designed specifically for them.

OUR APPROACH

We applied our four-phase methodology to transform Pillz's vision into a product ready to earn a permanent place on users' homescreens.

PHASE 1 — PRODUCT STRATEGY

We analyzed the competitive landscape of medication reminder apps, identifying a clear gap: most apps prioritize feature quantity over daily usability. Our product strategy centered on a "glanceable" design philosophy — the user should be able to see their medication status without even opening the app, thanks to homescreen widgets. We defined an MVP focused on three pillars: a dead-simple daily tracking flow, reliable smart reminders, and homescreen widgets that provide at-a-glance medication status. The doctor endorsement angle ("Recommended by doctors") was identified early as a key trust differentiator.

PHASE 2 — UX/UI DESIGN

Pillz's design had to feel warm, trustworthy, and refreshingly simple — the opposite of clinical. We chose a vibrant sky-blue palette that conveys health, calm, and reliability without the sterile feel of medical apps. The daily view was designed as a timeline — scrollable, date-aware, with each medication displayed as a card showing the pill name, dosage, timing, and meal context. The confirmation flow was reduced to its absolute minimum: tap "Taken" or "Skipped." The pill customization screen ("Let's pimp it") injects personality into an otherwise serious task, letting users choose pill shape, background color, and pill color — creating a visual system that makes identification instant.

PHASE 3 — DEVELOPMENT

Development focused on a native iOS application optimized for iPhone. Key integrations include a smart notification engine with customizable reminder schedules that respect do-not-disturb preferences, iOS homescreen widgets showing today's medication timeline with real-time status updates, a pill customization system with shape, color, and background personalization, a calendar-based tracking view with daily, weekly, and monthly history, a multi-medication management system supporting complex regimens (multiple daily doses, meal-relative timing, varying frequencies), and a medication detail modal with dosage, form, and scheduling information.

PHASE 4 — LAUNCH

The App Store launch was accompanied by ASO targeting keywords like "pill reminder," "medication tracker," and "pill organizer" in English. The doctor endorsement positioning ("Tracking pills with our patients so much easier — Recommended by doctors") was featured prominently in the App Store screenshots to establish immediate credibility. The free-to-download model was chosen to maximize adoption, with premium features planned for future monetization.

KEY FEATURES

Daily Pill Tracking: Timeline-based daily view showing all medications with name, dosage, timing, and meal context. One-tap confirmation: "Taken" or "Skipped" — nothing more.

Smart Reminders: Configurable push notifications that ensure users never miss a dose. The notification system was engineered for reliability — because in medication management, a missed alert isn't just an inconvenience, it's a health risk.

Homescreen Widgets: iOS widgets that display today's medication schedule directly on the homescreen. Users can monitor their adherence without ever opening the app — true "glanceable" health management.

Pill Customization: Full visual customization of each medication — shape (round, oval, capsule), background color, and pill color. This isn't cosmetic: visual differentiation makes it faster to identify medications in a list, reducing errors.

Calendar & History: Complete tracking history with calendar navigation. Users and their doctors can review adherence patterns over days, weeks, and months to identify gaps and optimize treatment.

Multi-Medication Support: Designed from the ground up for patients managing complex regimens — multiple medications, different dosages, varying frequencies, and meal-relative timing, all organized in a clean, scannable interface.
